What is ketamine therapy?

Clinician resting a hand on the shoulder of a patient in an eye mask and headphones during ketamine therapy

Ketamine therapy is a medically supervised treatment in which a low dose of ketamine is given in a monitored clinical setting, usually for depression that hasn't improved enough with other treatments. Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic, so its use for depression is off-label, and results vary and are not guaranteed.

Ketamine acts on glutamate, one of the brain's main chemical messengers, which is different from how most antidepressants work. Ketamine therapy in Vero Beach is combined with ongoing psychiatric care and therapy, not used on its own.

Who ketamine therapy is for

It may be considered for adults with depression that hasn't responded well enough to other treatments. Every patient is screened first with a psychiatric evaluation, medical history, current medications and vital signs.

It may not be suitable if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or certain heart conditions, a history of psychosis or current substance misuse, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have certain other conditions. We'll explain this at your evaluation and coordinate with your existing providers.

How ketamine therapy works

Each session includes time to rest and recover afterwards. Most people start with a series of sessions over at least 3 months, then move to maintenance.

Safety + monitoring in office

Every session takes place in a private, calm treatment room in our Vero Beach office. Your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels are monitored throughout, and our clinical team checks on you during the session. You’ll rest until the effects wear off, and you must have someone else drive you home.

The evaluation is $350. The treatment program is $349 a month with a 3-month minimum, and maintenance is $159 a month plus $129 per session.

How does ketamine work for depression?

Ketamine acts on glutamate, one of the brain's main chemical messengers, which is different from how most antidepressants work. Researchers believe this may help the brain form new connections, which is why some people notice changes faster than with traditional medication.

What does a ketamine session feel like?

Many people feel relaxed, detached or dreamlike during treatment, and these effects fade within an hour or two. Common short-term side effects include nausea, dizziness, raised blood pressure and feeling disconnected; your clinician monitors you throughout, and you'll need someone else to drive you home.

Is ketamine therapy safe?

In a monitored clinical setting, with screening first, it's generally well tolerated. Short-term side effects like nausea, dizziness and raised blood pressure are monitored throughout your session.

Can ketamine help with anxiety?

Ketamine is being studied for anxiety and other conditions, and that use is off-label. Your provider will discuss whether it's appropriate for you.
